The Lagos Surf Guide: Master Meia Praia and Porto de Mós

Whether you are an international traveler visiting the Algarve for the first time, or a local Portuguese surfer looking to optimize your sessions, understanding our two main town beaches is the key to scoring great waves.

Lagos is uniquely positioned on a corner of the coast. This means Meia Praia and Porto de Mós react completely differently to the exact same wind and swell conditions. Here is your educational breakdown of how to read them.

1. Meia Praia: The Ultimate Beginner Arena 

Stretching over 4 kilometers on the eastern side of Lagos, Meia Praia is famous for clean lines and smooth wave faces—but only under very specific conditions.

• The Reality of Summer (June, July, August): To be clear, peak summer is not ideal for surfing Meia Praia. For most of the summer, this bay is completely flat and calm like a lake. However, mid-summer occasionally catches rare Southeast (SE) Levante groundswells that light up the bay with perfect, clean longboard rollers.
• The Real Surf Season: Autumn through Winter is the premium season for this beach. This is when massive North Atlantic winter storms send giant swells down the coast, wrapping around the headland to create long, peeling walls. Southeast swells are still the most reliable.
• The Wind Factor: It handles the strong Nortada (North wind) beautifully because the land blocks it, keeping the water glassy. Often Southeast swells come with onshore winds but trust me it can be a lot of fun!
• Surf Level: Ideal for absolute beginners catching their first white-water waves, as well as intermediate longboarders working on cross-stepping, trim lines, and technical progression. On larger SE and W swells it's shortboardable although my board of choice is a twin fin.
• Where to eat & drink: After scanning the waves, grab a bite at the popular Bahia Beach Bar or enjoy fresh seafood  at Restaurante Sao Roque.

2. Porto de Mós: The Intermediate Testing Ground 

 

Located on the southwestern side of town, Porto de Mós faces a completely different direction and picks up much more swell than Meia Praia.

Best Season: Autumn to Spring (October to April). Winter brings consistent, powerful West swells that transform this bay into an incredible playground. In mid-summer, it is usually flat but worth keeping an eye on the forecast, a 2 metres swell from West might generate some fun waves.

The Wind Factor: It needs a North, Northwest or Northeast wind to stay clean. A strong West wind can blow it out quickly.

Surf Level: Ideal for advanced-beginners and intermediates. It features a mix of sand and flat reef patches, offering faster, punchier left and right walls to practice turning. The stretch from the restaurant "O Antonio" to the left end of the beach is usually better for beginners, offering a sandy bottom. The right side of the restaurant "O Antonio" is a mix of sand and rocks, while the very right end of the beach is a shallow reef (specially at low tide). Avoid surfing the reef unless you're a competent surfer.

Where to eat & drink: Relax right at the beach parking lot at Restaurante Campimar or enjoy stunning cliffside views at Restaurante O António .

Pro Forecaster Tips: Reading South Swells on Surf-Forecast.com

When tracking local conditions, keep an eye out for the Levante wind, which creates warm Southeast (SE) groundswells. To read these unique South swells like a pro, use the Surf-Forecast Meia Praia Platform:

1. Check the Swell Angle: Look at the "Swell Direction" column. Standard Atlantic swells come from the NW, but you are looking for rare arrows pointing from the S or SE.
2. Monitor the Wave Period: South swells are often short-period wind swells. If you see a period of 6–9 seconds paired with a Southeast angle, Meia Praia will light up with clean, glassy shapes.
3. Watch the Wind: A true Southeast wind will make the surf a bit messy but it can still be great fun. You want the South/Southeast swell to arrive while the local wind is blowing from the North or Northwest (Offshore) to perfectly groom the wave faces.
